This property is a mid century detached villa in the Ellesmere Park conservation area in Eccles, Salford. The client brief was for a single storey extension to create an open plan family room space and downstairs living accommodation for the client’s mother.
The design solution is a clean and simple box clad in a cedar rainscreen with large format glazed units connecting it with a generous garden at the rear.
A previous garden room and garage extension have been overclad to form the annex, giving a sense of unity to the two rear volumes.
In order to preserve the character of the conservation area a new brick garage, with traditional tiled roof masks the more contemporary rear extension from public highway.
The ground floor annex is designed to function as a self contained unit with a kitchenette, spacious bathroom and living quarters. The two domains interconnect via a door positioned off the main kitchen and dining area making this space the heart of the new extended family home.
